Il Medioevo - Magnficent Carlo Giuliano Pendant
About the Item
The theme is Christian in origin and the references point to the Byzantine, Gothic and Romanesque eras of the Medieval period. Revealing a multiplicity of thought and design, it is constructed in three parts - a removable surmount, main pendant reliquary and a removable drop. The use of the three leaf stem is typical of the Gothic period. Symbolizing the holy Trinity - The Father, The Son and the Holy Spirit, this triumvirate was often at the core of inspiration and patronage for art and architecture of the time.
First, the main pendant is shaped as an equal armed cross, actually a representation of Roman wall architecture in the form of a church. The "roof" lifts to reveal a reliquary or compartment where a sacred relic can be housed. At the reverse is a locket compartment with removable painting featuring a veiled grand dame.
A double-sided removable pendant bale lifts out by pulling one side of a pin. On each side the trefoil pattern repeats four times. At the bottom of the jewel is another removable locket pendant in the guise of a miniature recreation of a Roman temple. Representative of the sanctuary of a church, this would house the tabernacle. It also has a locket back compartment. The pendant is accompanied by an 18k yellow gold antique chain (not made by Giuliano).
