Large Antique Etruscan Revival 14K Yellow Gold Cabochon Garnet Disc Brooch
About the Item
Superb quality antique Etruscan Revival gold and cabochon garnet Greek key motif disk brooch. Centered by a substantial 16mm round deep red cabochon garnet set in a rope twist frame within a dramatic concave textured gold circle surrounded by a bold Greek key frame with a double rope twist border. The back attractively finished in heavy gold.
Great condition with light wear commensurate with age.

Tested for 14K gold
The first disc brooches date to the Bronze Age. The style became popular in Anglo-Saxon England where it was thought to have been introduced by migrations from the Scandinavian Countries. These brooches were used as clothes fasteners and were among the most prominent status symbols due to their high visibility, usually on the shoulder of the wearer. In the 19th century disc or circle brooches took on a more romantic meaning as symbols of eternal love.
