Made in France Diamond and Ruby Detachable Brooch – Circa 1860’s

About the Item

This item is an antique 19th-century diamond crescent moon brooch with a detachable spray of rubies and diamonds. It is made in France, circa 1860. The brooch features an elegant double-row crescent moon design adorned with 40 diamonds, all set in open-back settings. The spray of diamonds and natural rubies is attached to the reverse with a removable hinged pin and C-shape clasp brooch fitting. The diamonds consist of 76 stones, with the largest diamond measuring 4.3mm, and the largest ruby also measuring 4.3mm. The item is in good condition, with marks and scratches consistent with its age and wear. It was purchased in the city of Mumbai from a reputable jewelry store located in the famous Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in 2017. According to the description, it is believed that this piece of jewelry was commissioned by a Maharaja to be worn as an accessory on his turban, which explains the slight curve in the spray of leaves, diamonds, and rubies to accommodate its placement.
