Margot de Taxco Silver Floral Spray Brooch with Iolite
Margot van Voorhies Carr moved to Taxco, Mexico from San Francisco in the mid 1930s and became internationally famous for her jewelry, especially her silver and Champleve enamel pieces. So popular are her enamel-on-silver works that her simple silver pieces are often overlooked or deeply under-appreciated for their utterly stunning organic lines and balance of form. Margot's work in general has been eclipsed by—surprise!—the men of Taxco. Margot is arguably the most important woman to emerge from the Mexican silver renaissance and this rare example of her design aesthetic with this whitest of precious metals testifies to her incredible talent. With no elaborate enameling and no colors to entertain the eye, 100% of the burden falls upon the geometric form, and what a success. This rare and magnificent silver and iolite floral spray brooch was created by "Margo De Taxco," as she signed her work shortly after forming her own studio in 1948. This brooch is sumptuous to merely hold. It is impeccably crafted; a smooth sculptural masterpiece you can actually wear on your lapel. Margot's standards were high, evidenced by the perfection of her fluid lines. I'm a writer and I don't know how to describe for you how it feels to merely hold this brooch in your hand: it's weighty (14 grams) but it's magical somehow. It is luxury; it is the physical manifestation of a brilliant woman's creative vision; that's a great deal of power and you absolutely feel it. All the hallmarks are as they should be. I do not believe you will find another example of this brooch anywhere. Plenty of newer knockoffs, yes, but this is the original. And if you think brooches are for old ladies, you need to re-think that. Brooches are for people who wear fabric. You can pin a brooch to anything that doesn't scream. Lapel, backpack, hat, scarf, pocket of jeans, through handbag strap. This brooch is a way for you to express your individuality. That's why Margot created it. If you feel something when you look at it, that's how you know that it's art and that it touched you and that, perhaps, it belongs to you. You will find many lightweight replications of this brooch set with amethysts. This is the weighty original set with iolites.
