About the Item
This stylized antique cross brooch set with approximately 14.30 carats of old diamonds dates from circa 1870. It is designed with a domed oval center with flaring, lobed arms, mounted in dark patinated silver and low karat gold. A dramatic design of sparkling, brilliant diamonds in dark patinated silver and gold, this is a unique and bold statement jewel for glamorous occasions.

Jewelers of the mid 19th century looked back for inspiration to the work of French 18th century jewelers, who mounted diamonds in silver to spectacular effect. One of their major advances in the setting of diamonds in the 19th century was "a-jouring" - or opening the mountings of diamonds in back, allowing more daylight to enter the stones. The dark patina that silver naturally takes on increases the drama and brilliance of these jewels.
