About the Item

This is a lovely Victorian oval floral mosaic pin brooch crafted in 18K gold. The piece features semi precious stones cut and inlaid using Pietra dura mosaic technique. It has a very decorative frame. Unfortunately, one segment of the frame top is missing (shown in photos). "Pietra dura" is a mosaic technique that flourished in Florence in XVI-XVII centuries. Craftsmen worked with colourful semi-precious stones. Small mosaic details were carefully cut and inlaid into the base - marble or onyx. “Pietra dura” mosaics looked like paintings, with flowers, birds, fruits as popular motifs.
