Platinum, Gold and Diamond "Flamme" Vintage Brooch/Hair Barrette, c. 1960's
About the Item
Made popular by the world famous House of Van Cleef & Arpels, this Flame motif diamond set platinum piece backed with 18K yellow gold can be worn as either a brooch or hair barrette. In total it has 54 fine white diamonds. The total diamond weight is estimated to be 3.80 cts with the overall color and clarity to be approximately G/I (near colorless), and very slightly included to the first and second degrees,(VS1-2). The piece weighs 11.7 grams, is 3 inches in length and varies in width from 1/8th inches to 3/8th inches. On the back, there is a gold bar of "teeth" which will hold the piece in place both in the hair or on fabric.
This graceful motif called a "Flammes Clip" was first developed by Van Cleef & Arpels and worn by Jackie Kennedy during an official trip to Southern India in 1962. See photos numbered 134 and 135, Van Cleef & Arpels Reflections of Eternity, 2006, Editions Cercle D'Art. Other fine jewelers such as Oscar Heyman also had their own version of a Flame motif clip brooch. Our clip is not signed but, as evident of its fine craftsmanship and materials, was no doubt made by an important jewelry House.
In fine condition, this brooch bears no marks but acid tests to be 18K and platinum.
Please note our model is a medium to large size.

- Art Deco Platinum, Diamond and Burma Ruby Brooch/Hair Barrette, c. 1920.Located in Aspen, COArt Deco platinum, diamond and Burma ruby clip/hair barrette, c. 1920. This is a striking Art Deco statement possessing very fine and unusual fancy cut diamonds and natural unheated Burma rubies This piece can be worn either as a brooch or as a hair barrette. The diamonds are extremely rare and visually exciting to encounter. In the trade these are known as French cut diamonds. They are colorless to near colorless (F/G), and very very slightly included to very slightly included (VVS-VS). The estimated diamond weight is 9.5 cts. The natural unheated Burma rubies are a vivid red color, they are estimated to weigh 3.74 cts. The design of this geometric brooch is superb and contains unusually fine materials set with the highest of craftsmanship; and, visually presents itself as striking and vibrantly vivid. This clip was made so that it could be worn on fabric or in the hair as a barrette. The double stems in the back are slightly curved so that they can both slide through fabric smoothly, and comfortable and easy to wear in the hair. The clip is also slightly curved so that it will hold any thickness of hair or fabric. The two pinstems squeeze together and each fit into its own holder making the barrettes quite comfortable. This outstanding Art Deco piece was purchased with an identical Art Deco, very slightly smaller, brooch/hair clip - a sapphire and diamond matching statement, this piece is signed and numbered by Cartier (included in some of our photographs). This ruby brooch is slightly larger: 1/16th inch longer and 1/8th inch wider. The Cartier, very slightly smaller sapphire brooch measures 1- 7/8th in length, and one half of an inch in width. This diamond and unheated Burma Ruby brooch...Category

The diamonds are all well matched, estimated to be F in color (colorless), and very, very slightly included (VVS) in clarity. They are estimated to weigh .98 cts. This piece can be worn either as a brooch or as a hair barrette. Leave it to the great jeweler Cartier to design a piece that can slide through fabric smoothly and easy to wear in the hair and, because this clip is slightly curved it will hold any thickness of hair. The two pinstems squeeze together and each fit into its holder making the barrettes quite comfortable. This Cartier Art Deco diamond and unheated Burma sapphire platinum brooch/hair barrette was purchased with an architecturally identical but very slightly larger ruby brooch (1/16th inch longer, and 1/8th inch wider).
