Early 20th century Egyptian revival gold and enamel brooch
Located in Malmö, SE
An early 20th century Egyptian Revival gold brooch, depicting a vulture centred with a faïence scarab, clutching lotus pods and surmounted with a cabochon ruby, polychrome enamel decoration overall and engraved to reverse, 3.5cm wide. One arrow missing. Revival is always happening in the jewelry world. The Indiana Jones inside all of us is always enticed by the buried loot of the ancients. It’s one of the reasons Egyptian Revival jewelry is so alluring. Luckily for jewelry connoisseurs the span of history that have laid way to an aesthetic resurgence and intense interest in all things Egyptian during the last two hundred years. Napoleon’s Egyptian campaign in 1798 ignited the West’s fascination with motifs we have all come to associate with Egyptian Revival—sphinxes, pyramids, palmettes, papyrus leaves. This curiosity was further stimulated by the excitement surrounding the completion of the Suez Canal in 1869, after 10 years of construction, arousing a real revival of the Egyptian style, with jewelers specifically incorporating artifacts that were thousands of years old, faience in the shapes of falcons and scarabs, set into jewels framed by vermilion enamel and lapis lazuli. Some of the highlights in the 19th century timeline of Egyptomania include the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, displays at World’s Fairs and the moment when Cleopatra’s Needle...

Victorian 18K Gold Etruscan Revival Ram’s Head Brooch
Located in Venice, CA
A tour de force of workmanship, this 18k gold Victorian brooch is hand tooled with stunning detail, lifelike in its intricacy. Its centerpiece is the head of a ram with Old Mine Cut rubies for eyes and horns that wrap around the body of the pin. The ram is mature: his horns are long from his many years of life and they intertwine with the pin with scrolling flourish. His fur is stippled, its texture emphasized by a glowing patina, while his horns are textured with elegantly carved lines that detail and shade the curves. The pin has a barbell-esque shape, with cubed terminals that feature Etruscan Revival cannetille work and floral medallions. The 18k gold has developed a gorgeous multicolored patina, lustrous in its hues of greens, coppers, and reds, giving added depth to this beautiful piece. Etruscan Revival jewelry has a rich and interesting history. In the early 1800’s there was a large excavation of Etruscan tombs outside of Rome. Within these tombs were pieces of original Etruscan jewelry. The Etruscans were master artisans, they created breathtaking pieces of jewelry through their use of gold wirework and granulation, colored gemstones and glass. The news of the excavation of these tombs, and the treasures contained inside them, spread throughout Europe. Etruscan style jewelry...
