The rare, collectable metal, Pinchbeck, is the setting for 18th century shell cameos of a male and female god and goddess. The earrings are all original including the tops and after more than 200 years are in perfect condition. Typical of Georgian earrings they are left and right sided with the images facing each other. Pinchbeck has a fascinating history. It was the first gold metal that never changes color, was light on the ear and was always as valuable as gold because of its history and scarcity. Christopher Pinchbeck was the alchemist who was dedicated to inventing a gold duplicate. Gold was scarce in the 18th century and the late and early 1800's. Once he made Pinchbeck royalty clamored for it. Christopher kept the formula top secret and passed it only to his son who continued the work but for a short time only. Poor substitutes came along in the form of gilding, gold casing and rolled gold. These earrings being original and true Pinchbeck are a valuable collector's item and an heirloom of jewelry history.
