These architectonic earrings, made in the 21st century, circa 2019, are not only an homage to Art Deco design with their forms conjuring details from soaring skyscrapers of the period, but also a meditation on the beauty of citrine and topaz. The unique pair of clip-back earrings are crafted in 18K yellow gold with perfectly symmetrical silhouettes measuring 0.93 x 0.6 inches (15.24 x 23.63 mm); however, one earring is set with a citrine gemstone, and the other with blue topaz. Long ago, citrine and topaz were thought to be different colorations of the same stone, and many cultures called citrine by names like gold topaz, or Madeira and Spanish topaz. But in fact, they are unrelated mineral species. Citrine is in the quartz family and topaz belongs to the silicate mineral family. From an aesthetic standpoint, the two stones have a similar color value—in other words, lightness or luminosity—and thus are harmonious companions, yet the colors are markedly different. The citrine blends well with the warm gold that surrounds it, while the blue topaz acts more as a complementary color to the gold, opposite on the color wheel, making each pop. Each color combination, however, offers a serene, restrained look of sophistication. Citrine is said to attract prosperity, balance emotions, bring wealth, and clear the mind. Blue topaz is said to promote openness and bring joy, generosity, abundance, and good health. It is known as a stone of love and good fortune and releases tension, inducing relaxation. So in this way, the stones are quite complementary. The overall silhouette of these earrings is that of a cleverly constructed demi hoop that tapers from top to bottom with attractive fluting throughout, molded in the gold and carved in the gemstones. At the top of the design, the gemstones bear 5 vertical flutes apiece, framed on three sides by gold and open at the top. Immediately below, the motif is rotated 90 degrees with 4 horizontal flutes in gold. Below that, rotated 90 degrees back, are 4 vertical gold flutes. The parallel and perpendicular lines create a geometric harmony in such a small expanse. From side view, we can see the delicate arc of each demi-hoop seamlessly passed from gold to gemstones. There is certainly a lot of thoughtfulness and artisanship to this unique design. Each earring measures approx. 0.93” by 0.6”; clip-on style.
