About

Beautiful cast gilt earrings by Mitchel Maer for Christian Dior, in the form of mythic 'hippocamps', (flying horses with fish's tails), with drop baroque pearls, and brushed in a black patina, from the early 1950s, and from an original French design. The casting is of the highest and finest quality and these 'creatures' are very iconic in French culture, (as well as earlier Phoenician and Greek culture.). These are true collector's items!
An American by birth, Mitchel Maer settled in England , where his company made jewellery for Christian Dior in the 1950's. The jewellery created was of great artistic and technical quality. He collaborated and liaised with Paris for designs, mixing Georgian and Victorian designs, as well as Byzantine, and those of the ancient world. The originality of his jewels and his highly personal style granted him the privilege of co-signing his pieces ‘Christian Dior by Mitchel Maer’. This ephemeral house lasted a few years, ceasing in 1956. Hence these rare and beautiful pieces are highly cherished.
