Victorian Dramatic Carved Coral Cannetille Wirework Day Night Earrings

About the Item

Absolutely incredible cannetille wirework and coral earrings from the early Victorian (ca1850) period! These fantastic earrings are crafted in 18kt yellow gold and are particularly large in size. With a magnificent and royal-looking appearance, each earring portrays exquisitely carved coral cameos, each set within with very fine cannetille wirework frames. The beautiful earrings can be transformed from simple "day" earrings to a more dramatic and long "night" earring and each begins with a smaller, carved coral cameo which is surrounded by a gold leaf and cannetille wirework frame. The cameos are of only the bust of a woman who is looking slightly to the side, each looking in a different direction. These 'day' toppers rest at the base of European back earring wires, which fasten in the front. A long, but very light "night" link hangs from the "day" part which also carries the complimentary coral and wirework design. With an elongated teardrop shape, the cameos on the "night" part are much larger and more elaborate. Each portrays an incredibly detailed bust of a woman, who is again looking slightly off to one side while a hand-standing cherub is carved at the top. The carvings show fantastic detail including folds in the fabric of her dress, curled locks of hair, soft facial features and even textured feathers on the back of the cherubs. The cannetille wirework which frames each teardrop coral cameo is equally ornate and detailed. The textured open wirework, flowers, leaves and gold beadwork complete the design perfectly and the quality of the cannetille wirework is absolutely spectacular. The "night" section of the earring can be easily removed from the wires as desired for 2 completely different looks. They are simply marvelous earrings and would be perfect for a special occasion and are a must-have for a collector! Each 'night' earring hangs approximately 3 3/8" long at the longest point, is slightly less than 1" at the widest point and has a depth of 3/8". When worn as 'day' earrings, each hangs approximately 7/8" long, is 5/8" at the widest point and has a depth of 1/4".

Condition:
Wear consistent with age and use. The overall condition of the earrings is excellent. Amazingly, there does not appear to be any sort of damage to any of the finely carved coral cameos or to the cannetille gold wirework. The European wires are secure and in good working condition.
