Vintage William Spratling Sterling Silver Large Mexican Modernist Earrings

About the Item

These beautiful, large William Spratling earrings have the ephemeral feel of butterfly wings. William Spratling, Architecture professor and lecturer, has been called the Father of Mexican Modernist Silver Design. He earned a degree in architecture from Auburn University, formerly the Alabama Polytechnic Institute and was invited to teach there upon graduation. In 1931, he travelled to Taxco, Mexico to re-establish the silver industry traditional to the area, naming his workshop Taller de las Delicias. Striking, unusual Mesoamerican and Pre-Colombian motifs with a modern aesthetic and high level of quality attracted collectors and gave Mexican artisans a venue for expressing their cultural heritage. Spratling silver was sold through such prominent American stores as Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus. Size: 2.25 inches high; 1.5 inches wide Screwback earrings backs Condition: Very Good Marks: William Spratling, 925 for sterling silver, Taxco, Mexico
