These Vintage Art Deco Diamond Emerald Drop Earrings, made during the Art Deco Era, have all the allure of a time past. The design is rooted in Georgian and Victorian jewelry but was brought into the Deco period (approx. 1919-1939). The focal point is the emeralds that drop down below the ear, which were once believed to confer riches, power, and eloquence if worn as talismans. They are among the rarest of all gemstones often more expensive than diamonds, mined and prized for centuries since the reign of Cleopatra, who had a particular passion. The elegant drop earrings are crafted in platinum and feature 2 pear shape emeralds with an approximate weight of 5 carats each. The emeralds are estimated to be Zambian, which are known to be extremely high quality, and often described as the finest deep-green color of any emerald on earth. Zambian emeralds get their beautiful intense green color from the presence of chromium, iron, and beryllium, which add to the overall depth of the stone. The lack of vanadium, predominant in Colombian emeralds, results in its distinctive shade that ranges from light to dark green and slightly bluish to bluish green. In fact, Zambian emeralds have a greater level of clarity than their Colombian counterparts, because of a lower incidence of “eye-visible” inclusions, thus better-reflecting light and enhancing their color. The emeralds are set within pear shape platinum surrounded with a profusion of prongs—12 per stone—that appear to emanate organically from the metal. The sizable drops are each suspended from an articulated and artful configuration comprised of 8 round brilliant cut diamonds—5 arranged in a Y shape and 3 set within a crescent moon cap with scalloped cutouts. The individual diamonds are set similarly to the emeralds, within platinum bezel surrounds that reflect the sparkle, held with prongs that emanate up from the metal. The clever mounting makes the diamonds bright and white. We can see this unique mounting in Georgian (1714-1830) and Victorian (1837-1901) jewelry pieces, typically used to set old mine-cut diamonds that were cut to sparkle in candlelight, even though these were fashioned later during the Art Deco Era.
