About the Item
Orbs of hand carved Whitby Jet are separated and tipped with gold in these historic earrings from the Victorian era in England. The carving is deeply cut by hand and represents dense leaf fronds. Here black coal- like jet is lightened by the addition of 15ct gold, making these ear drops attractive for summer as well as winter apparel.
Queen Victoria, shocked by the untimely death of her husband, Prince Albert in 1861 went into deep mourning for twenty six years. Black was the only color of jewelry permitted in her court. The female population of England. with love and honor for their queen, donned black jewels as well. The town of Whitby mined and created jet objects prior to Alberts death but flourished with the increased demand for the material until Victoria ended her mourning in 1887..
