About the Item

Ceylon has long since been the most famous source of blue sapphires. The island, renamed Sri Lanka in 1972, lies on the North-Eastern side of India, in the middle of the Indian Ocean. According to contemporary sources, Ceylon sapphires were set in precious jewellery pieces even by the ancient Greeks and Romans. King Solomon himself is said to have courted the legendary Queen of Saba with gifts of sapphires mined in the area of Ratnapura, meaning „city of gems“. From these iconic mines, two large blue sapphires of approx. 9,40 ct altogether have made their way into the vintage earrings at hand. The sapphires have not been heat treated and are entirely natural, making these earrings true investment pieces. Like petals, brilliant-cut diamonds surround the faceted blue sapphires, and two quarter-carat diamonds are placed atop. The precious stones are placed in settings of white gold which further intensify the contrast of blue and white. Made in the 1960s, the earrings are a beautiful example of the glamorous and sophisticated taste of the time. The cool-toned colour combination and entourage design is truly timeless and allows the earrings to be worn to a multitude of occasions.
