Antique Topaz Poissarde Earrings
About the Item
The all-original ear wires are in a typical ear shape with a curved wire “S” as support. At the top of the wire is a small ring. Two hypotheses emerge as to its etiology and function: one is that the ring prevents the earring from slipping too far forward on the ear; the other suggests that the ring was used to attach a string or thread to the hair to provide additional support in larger earrings (some of which were heavy to the point of extreme).
Measurements: 1-1/4 inches (3.2 cm) in length by 3/4 of an inch (1.9 cm) in width. This pair of antique earrings has a weight of 4.4 grams (2.8 dwt).
Historical Notes: The poissarde earring arose in Europe at the end of the 18th century. Derived from a type of French provincial earring, legend has it that this form (which resembled a fish hook) was worn by the wives of French village fishermen. Although its shape was transformed to appeal to the more fashionable aristocratic women of the time, it still retained a hinged fitting at the back with a curved wire in an S-shape for support which fastened to the front.
