Very Scarce Georgian Garnet & Pearl Earrings

About the Item

“Fabulous jewelry never goes out of fashion.” The authorship of this quote is unknown but could be attributed to one of several jewelry designers who will remain nameless. No matter the author as this pair of very scarce Georgian earrings circa 1820 superbly supports the contention. During this era garnets, especially the flat-cut ones were the most favored gem for jewelry worn during the day. Moreover, seed pearls played an essential role in all forms of Georgian jewelry. This pair of medium length pendant earrings appears to be substantial in weight yet is quite light. Very scarce, these magnificent earrings are divine in every aspect from choice of gems to configuration. Three-dimensional construction and sculptural design bring an exciting modern look to an heirloom two part earring of 9k yellow gold. A large pear shaped drop with bulbous reverse of gold is centered with a teardrop garnet and a pinched gold collet. Surrounding the garnet a series of natural half seed pearls (untested but guaranteed to be natural) embraces the gem with its pear shaped caress only to be superseded with a pavé perimeter of flat cut almandine garnets foiled and set closed back. In all, seventeen (17) garnets and fifteen (15) seed pearls adorn the pendant drop. Please note the two petite pears near the apex of the drop. The similarly set surmount is a round cluster of a centered round garnet bordered with a frame of twelve (12) tiny seed pearls and a surround of fourteen (14) flat almandine garnets foiled and set closed back with a sculptural and bulbous reverse. Later 10k yellow gold ear wires finish the period earrings. Date: Circa 1820. Measurements: 1-3/4 inches (4.5 cm) in length including ear wire and 1-3/8 inches (3.5 cm) without by 1/2 of an inch (1.2 cm) at the widest. Weight of 12.7 grams (8.1 dwt) for the pair.
