About the Item

This antique Georgian Flat cut Garnet mourning 18ct Gold brooch is Circa 1790. Due to its age, Georgian jewellery is quite rare, with some pieces almost three hundred years old. From 1714 until 1837 four King Georges and a short-lived William gave rise to this extended period, spanning many fashions that are reflected in these stunning pieces of Georgian jewellery. It is adorned with a halo of 14 Flat cut Garnets. The Garnet is a stone of purity and truth as well as a symbol of love and compassion. The Garnet will help everyone's security level and spiritual awareness. The central window of the brooch contains fancy plaited hair inside which is complimented by Turquoise stones which represent the forget me not. The Turquoise stone has healing properties, it protects the wearer from negative energy and can bring good fortune. Furthermore, Turquoise is the symbol of friendship, and brings peace to there home. It is also Decembers birthstone too! Forget-me-not, O Lord! is what a poor German knight shouted as he fell into a river. He and his lady were picking flowers by the side of the river at the time, no doubt enjoying the beautiful day around them, and yet as fate would have it, the knight's armour dragged him down to the bottom as he fell in. This little tale reportedly dates to around the 15th century, but no doubt had different permeations along the way, as romantic stories often do. Mourning jewellery mirrored the lives and times of the people who wore it. It was a souvenir to remember a loved one, a reminder to the living of the inevitability of death, a status symbol, especially during the Victorian Era. All set in 18ct Gold with initials on the reverse of the Gold plate. A fabulous brooch that is steeped in history. It weighs 7.8 grams. The brooch measures 33mm x 26mm down. Excellent condition all round.
