A silver, garnet, chysoberil and white aquamarine cross of the Military Order of Christ. Portugal mid XVIII century. The Military Order of Christ (formerly Real Ordem dos Cavaleiros de Nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo) was an order that drew its heritage from the Order of the Templars after they were finally suppressed in 1312. Under the heavy influence of King Philip IV of France, Pope Clement V ordered to suppress the Templars throughout Christendom and considering it as heresy to the excessive power gained over the years, but the Portuguese king Dionysius forced the Pope to create a new Order with the purpose to survive the Templar's spirit. This Order, founded in 1318 took the name of Order of Christ. King Dionysius negotiated with the successor of Pope Clement, Pope John XXII for the official recognition of the new Order in the hope of getting even the possessions of the Templars for the new Order.
