Art Nouveau Plique à Jour Scarab Pendant
About the Item
Revival designs were rampant during the Victorian era as ancient Assyrian, Etruscan and Egyptian sites were being excavated bringing examples of antique jewelry styles to light. Here the imagery of ancient Egypt is realized in the figure of the sacred winged scarab. Quite prodigious in size, silver gilt has been used to capture the form of mammoth wings of verdant green, blush pink and yellow-green spread wide in opulence of color.
A large natural baroque pearl (11 mm by 15 mm) represents the body with a suspended drop of yet another natural baroque pearl 8 mm by 11 mm in size. Antennae of vermeil appointed with small half pearls balance the sweeping curves of the wings. Two short lengths of link chain bridged with an “O” fitting complete the antique piece.
