Amethyst Bead Necklace Arts & Crafts Era

About

Entirely hand-fabricated during the Arts and Crafts era (circa 1910) probably in England, this beautiful and sensuous amethyst bead necklace is a jewel in every sense of the word. Each hand-polished bead is richly saturated and features natural inclusions and color zoning for maximum visual interest. The bead are so smooth (and none are chipped, scratched or otherwise nicked) they feel like sea-glass. Each bead is joined together by hand-twisted wire. Over the many years this necklace has been worn and loved, the friction of the silver metal-against-metal has been eliminated, so that the necklace flows through your fingers like liquid. The beads average in size 12 mm x 14 mm and are irregular; testament to their hand-crafting. The necklace is 18" and closes with a classic round spring-clasp. The spring clasp is not the slightest bit loose; however it's also not frustratingly tight. The nearly 7 mm size makes the clasp easy to operate, even by cumbersome paws like mine. I know, I know, I know: purple is polarizing. People seem to either love it or ... not. I love purple. It's majestic —indeed, at one point in time only kings and queens could wear the color— and it looks wonderful with all complexions. I'm a huge fan of coral but that oxblood red coral? You really have to have the right coloring to pull that blue-red off. Not so with the vivid yet watery purple. I like, too, that the round "O" ring into which the clasp secures is also nice and large: with a tiny bit of ingenuity you could hang a pendant from this necklace. Say, for example, a 1930's carved amethyst cicada from China. That would look wonderful. But I love this necklace most all by itself. Arts & Crafts jewelry is rare, period. But these are quartz beads; one would expect them to be chipped. It is truly a testament to this necklace's beauty that it has been so carefully
