Double Row Momo Coral Necklace w Carved Ivory Centerpiece
About the Item
A magnificent signed ivory Netsuke of a peony, highly collectible, by famed ivory carver Shozan/Matsuyam in the late 19th Century- Meiji period, on a 2-row necklace of extremely fine Japanese 6.5MM Momo pink/cream coral beads. The Meiji period was late 19th Century- early 20th Century.
The ivory carving is 37.46MM Wide -37.46 Long and 19.24 deep. Signed on back the necklace length is 17.5 inches total with a 14karat filagree clasp.
Momo corals can be found in the tropical waters north of Taiwan and Japan, which live at depths of 150 to 300 meters. It can be identified by having whitish round spots or vein called “soul”. This might seem a flaw, but is a valuable feature as it helps determine the authenticity and provenance of the coral. Its color changes from medium light red to salmon/orange to pink/peach to reddish pink in color depending on the quality.
