Lapis Lazuli and Gold Bead Necklace 31"
About the Item
This gorgeous circa 1970s necklace is composed of ninety-two 8mm natural hand-carved and hand-polished Lapis Lazuli beads, punctuated with a dozen fluted 14K yellow gold beads. A 14k yellow gold filigree clasp completes the piece. The clasp is marked for metal fineness (14k) and bears a maker's mark that I have been unable to identify. Although this is not a Gump's of San Francisco necklace, it could be: it is Gump's quality.
These vibrant blue beads -streaked with golden pyrite inclusions- are reminiscent of the sky on a day when the sky looks more intensely blue and magnificent than you can ever remember before. This unique color is the joy of lapis. The beads are also on their original black silk, which still appears sturdy. So the drape is perfect. Once the silk seems simply too worn, your jeweler can restring this necklace for you for a nominal fee.
The name Lapis Lazuli is derived from the Latin word “Lapis” meaning stone and the Persian word “lāzaward” meaning sky or heavens. This is fitting as its vibrant blue hue, often streaked with golden pyrite inclusions, is reminiscent of the sky. The fact that the necklace is 31" in length means you can wear it doubled if you have a slender neck.
In terms of its gemological makeup, Lapis Lazuli is a metamorphic rock primarily composed of lazurite, along with other minerals such as calcite, pyrite, and sodalite. Lazurite must make up 25% or more of the stone for it to count as Lapis Lazuli. The presence of pyrite and calcite gives the stone its gold and white colors, respectively.
As for its associations, Lapis Lazuli carries symbolic and spiritual significance in various cultures. It has been associated with qualities such as wisdom, truth, and inner peace.
