About the Item
This gold and bead necklace, was crafted by a pre-Columbian artisan from the Gran Coclé area of Panama. It represents a rich cultural tradition of adornment, utilizing some of the most advanced gold-casting techniques known to the world at that time. This necklace was likely made for an elite individual, such as a priest or a high-ranking official, as part of their adornment collection. Both men and women would wear up to 60 lbs of gold in the form of breastplates, pendants and rings, symbolizing their rank and prestige.
This necklace was among the many gold ornaments found along ancient trade routes that spanned from Costa Rica to Colombia. It takes the form of a collar, with gold rounded spikes alternated with refined white beads. The ancient origins of this exquisite piece still resonate today, serving as an authentic symbol of history that modern designers often seek to replicate.
