This gold book chain from the Victorian era (ca1880) is quite an outstanding piece! English in origin, it is hand crafted in vibrant 15ct yellow gold and has a wonderful Etruscan wirework motif applied to the surface. The design is comprised of interlocking panel links, each connected with smooth gold rings at the top and bottom. The Etruscan wirework and beadwork pattern gives wonderful depth and texture to the design, while the reverse side of the piece is left smooth. A removable gold spring ring clasp rests at the center, allowing a complimentary pendant or locket to be attached to the center if desired. At the back fo the necklace is a push clasp disguised within one of the links, and two gold safety latches provide extra security when worn. The underside of the clasp is hallmarked "15CT." This rare mourning locket from the Victorian (ca1875) era is quite a stunning piece! Crafted in vibrant 18k gold, the decorative locket serves as an incredible example of the mourning jewelry tradition. A delicate white pearl is pin-set in a gold 8-pointed star; a classic Victorian motif. The pearl and star rest in the center of a bezel-set piece of banded agate, surrounded by a gold twisted rope-like border around the bezel. The agate and pearl are encompassed by a broad gold boarder heavily adorned with black enamel. The enamel script reads "In memory of" on the four points of the cross. In between the points of the cross, gorgeously enameled flower-like shapes fill in the negative space. The outer edges of the locket also feature spoked gold-shot detail. The locket also boasts an over-sized bail that features the same floral enamel styling that can be seen throughout. This stunning necklace dates from the Hellenistic Period. Beginning with the death of Alexander the Great in 323 B.C., the era is renowned for its artistic efflorescence. Gold flooded into the Eastern Mediterranean after Alexander’s conquest of Persia, and with an abundance of material to work with, the skill of Hellenistic jewellers reached new heights of refinement and inspiration. This piece likely dates from the Late Hellenistic period, during which jewellers made innovative use of gemstones within elaborate gold settings. This necklace composed of ancient elements, including 10 gold beads with hanging charms, 28 large natural polished garnet beads and a large central gold capped lozenge shaped banded agate. From the Hellenistic period, this necklace may have originated from Greece or as far East as the Bactriana (modern day Northern Afghanistan, including parts of southwestern Tajikistan and southeastern Uzbekistan). This necklace has been restrung and fitted with an 18ct gold S clasp.
