This lovely example of a 1940s bookchain necklace with earrings features vibrant and enchanting colours. Condition Report: Very Good - Some darkening to the gilt metal in a couple of places. This is only visible upon very close inspection and does not detract from the overall appeal of the pieces. The Details... This jewellery set includes a necklace and earrings. The necklace features a gilt metal bookchain. It is detailed around its centre with round, green glass beads that are terminated with a gilt metal flower design. These beads are interspersed with large green glass teardrops, suspended from a gilt metal filigree design with red glass chips hanging at either side. The hook earrings each feature the green glass beads terminated by a metal flower design. They are suspended from a gilt metal filigree design, with chips of red glass hanging at either side. The neacklace measures 38cm and fastens with a hook and eye mechanism. The earrings measure 4cm x 1cm. A Short History... Glass has been a prevelant feature of costume pieces since the invention of jewellery. An easily accessible material that can be formed into any shape and dyed any colour. Glass was heavily used in 1940s pieces, such as this set, because of it's ability to meet the need for affordable jewellery during and after the Second World War. The quality, clarity and weight of the glass in this set, suggests that it could have been made by the famed French manufacturer Gripoix. Founded by Augustine Gripoix in 1869, her daughter Suzanne was most likely at the helm when these pieces were made. Suzanne was famous for her work with designers, such as Coco Chanel and Lanvin. Wear it with... Pair the vibrant colours in this set with grey or black to allow them to really stand out. Alternatively wear with rich red velvet for a Winter look.
