1990s Carla Riccoboni 'Alphabet' Post-Modernist Modular Gold Long Chain Necklace 18k yellow gold Length 96 cm (approx. 37 ¾”), width 1.1 cm (approx. 7/16”), elements 23 by 11 mm (approx. 7/8" by 7/16") Weight approx. 73.8 grams Marks: gold content mark ‘750’ for 18k gold; Italian assay marks (Vicenza) Italy, 1990s The ‘Phitos’ necklace from the ‘Alphabet’ series developed by Carla Riccoboni during the 1970s to 1990s is a modular gold chain composed of elements interlinking without soldering: It looks complicated but is made of one single, two-dimensional, oval element. Repeated and linked into the next one in such a clever way that together they develop volume and three-dimensionality. The gold is forged to make it resilient, durable and strong against accidental bending and at the same time the chain stays extremely flexible due to the clever linking. The outward surface of the elements have a matte finish, the insides are polished, lending the chain an elegant, not too flashy appearance with just a touch of hidden bling. You think it will get entangled? It looks like it. But it just doesn’t happen, due to the rounded, closed shape of the elements, offering no open flank to get entangled. It doesn’t even get entangled in itself when carelessly thrown into a jewellery box or satin bag. You draw it out again, shake it once – and it is perfect. It is the type of jewellery piece you grab on your way out of the door, the cab driver honking, and you fling it over your head and – it falls into place without you having to give it a second thought. It simply adjusts to your body and you are dressed. When you shake it, it doesn’t jingle, it makes a soft whispering sound of a rattle snake still at a distance. Be sure your counterpart will repeatedly gaze at it to detect its concept and construction. Can also be worn as a double strand necklace. Carla Riccoboni (1949 - ) taught jewellery design in Venice and Bassano de Grappa from 1976 to 1992. Since then she has been leading workshops and taken part in exhibitions throughout Europe, focusing on geometric designs and the impact of repetitions of reduced forms.
