About the Item

Both the discovery of new mines as well as the advent of electric lighting were favourable factors in the popularity of diamond jewellery during the late 19th century. Set in silver on gold, diamonds would gleam brightly even at soirées, dinners and balls. This necklace perfectly embodies the style of the late 19th century through its use of diamonds, a blue sapphire and natural pearl, all set into a design of subtle floral references. Overall 57 old European cut diamonds are embedded into stylised leaves and suspended from so-called knife-wire elements so typical of the time. The blue sapphire takes centre stage, surrounded by further diamonds like petals. The oriental pearl is suspended below. A delicate chain completes the design. In the imagination of the 19th century, gemstones were imbued with meaning. The blue sapphire referenced truth and fidelity, whilst the diamond's hardness made it especially suitable to represent eternity. The pearl was linked with Venus, the goddess of love, as both are born from a seashell. Altogether, the combination would have made this necklace a gift of not only aesthetic, but also sentimental value. The necklace is in very good condition. We were able to acquire it from an estate in Cologne, Germany.
