About the Item

The bottle pendant was Elsa Peretti's first design inspired by holidays in Portofino in the 1960s. In 1969, Elsa Peretti was modeling for Giorgio di Sant' Angelo when she realized she wanted to make jewelry. She started creating simple, abstract designs in wax and casting them in silver for Sant'Angelo, Oscar de la Renta and Halston. She won a Coty Award in 1971. Peretti is interested in sinuous shapes inspired by nature, simple in design, beautifully crafted. The myth of Halston is that of the glamor and decadence of the 1970s, of a glittering clientele, of many, long nights spent under the disco lights of Studio 54 and of cigarettes and caviar in a sleek and modern townhouse on East 63rd Street. The reality of Halston is that he revolutionized the way women dress and is one of the few designers, alongside Claire McCardell and Norman Norell, to define what is American fashion. Halston recognized that a fashion revolution was coming in the early 70s. Women needed clothes not just for lunches but for work. They wanted to be comfortable, to look good during the day and to be sexy and glamorous in the evening. And Halston gave them what they wanted. Taking sportswear and transforming it into something exciting in luxurious fabrics, elegant and clean, with awareness of the body, and much less known, fashion that appeared effortless but in reality with complex construction and pieces often cut on the challenging bias and sometimes sewn with just a single seam. In 1971 when Grace Mirabella was named editor of American Vogue after the fashion fantasy fueled years of Diana Vreeland, she chose an all Halston wardrobe for her first trip to Paris to see the haute couture. “If I wanted to be more dressed, I‘d wear gold and charmeuse. If I wanted to be less dressed, it would be matte jersey. If I wanted bare, I would take off the jacket and the top would be bare down the back. And if I wanted ornamentation, Halston would provide a perfect little drop of some accessory designed by Elsa Peretti.” He designed democratically; for large women with jiggly arms like his big girl ambassador, Warhol actress, Pat Ast and for thin, elegant society swans like Babe Paley. Halston said “You have to design for what people are, not for what you would like them to be.”
