Silver Necklace/ Rosary edition of 5 The 2011 collaboration between Kendell Geers and Elisabetta Cipriani Gallery resulted in three different iconic pieces that convey the characteristic intensity of the artist’s works. Speaking in Tongues (Stella Maris) is a rosary which is worn as a necklace. It is made of female nipples cast from a live model and put together in the classic rosary format. Kendell Geers (South African, b. 1968) is known best for using a variety of colours and materials that signal danger such as sirens, broken glass, and barbed wire in an attempt to examine power structures, social injustices, and establishment values. He is sometimes described as a political artist. Geers has worked with different media ranging from objects to large-scale installations, neon works, performances and video. Geers also uses words as a means to explore the coding and reinterpretation of language – its meaning and a way of communicating with his audience. He has exhibited globally since 1993 and participated in numerous international exhibitions including Documenta, the Carnegie International, Havana Biennial, Istanbul Biennial, Kwang Ju Biennial, Taipei Biennial, Gwangju Biennale, Lyon Biennial, and Venice Biennale. Geers also presented many solo exhibitions, including at Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst Gent, Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, MOCA in Rome, Migros Museum, Palais de Tokyo, the CAC in Lyon and Haus der Kunst in Munish. Elisabetta Cipriani – Jewellery by Contemporary Artists invites renowned international sculptors and painters to create exclusive wearable sculptures with the use of precious materials. It is the first time that these artists have approached the realm of jewelry, establishing parallels with their artistic disciplines and poetics. Since 2009 this London-based gallery is exclusively collaborating with 16 distinctive contemporary artists including Ilya & Emilia Kabakov, Carlos Cruz-Diez, Enrico Castellani, Erwin Wurm, Giorgio Vigna, Jannis Kounellis, Rebecca Horn and Tatsuo Miyajima.
