Brown Diamond Drop Necklaces

The pearl featured in this pendant is a platinum-white cultured South Sea pearl and a rather massive one at that, measuring approximately 16.50 mm in diameter. The longer a pearl stays in the sea, the larger it grows but the more opportunity there is for surface imperfections to occur. The surface of this large pearl has natural imperfections, but they don't matter because the pearl has such a beautiful, soft luster and a lovely orient; the play of color exhibited by fine pearls with thick nacre. You can feel the thickness of the nacre through your fingertips and you can see how beautifully the thick nacre of this pearl makes light slide around along the surface of this luxurious pearl. South Sea pearls don't have the same sharp luster of a Japanese Akoya; the South Sea pearl has a softer finish, more of a radiance, a glow. I love the five-petaled thick silver bail that is set with 26 full-cut diamonds in a range of sizes from approximately 1.5 mm to 3.33 mm and total at least half a carat. These diamonds present a range of sultry browns: I see reddish-brown, golden-brown, yellow-brown and a greenish-brown. Until the 1950s, brown diamonds were considered inferior to white diamonds and their use was reserved for industrial purposes. They lacked the fire of pure white diamonds and were the visual opposite of what was considered ideal. Several companies attempted to market brown diamonds and met with moderate success but only in 2000 did brown diamonds take off when Le Vian coined and trademarked the words, chocolate diamonds™ and made brown diamonds ubiquitous. This pendant pre-dates the mass popularity of brown diamonds. And that makes it visionary. The choice to use dark, smoldering brown diamonds in a white-diamond world was brilliant because they emphasize the platinum coloring of this satin-finish South Sea pearl. The diamonds do possess fire but they don't sparkle and flash; they sort of glint at you. The pearl is drilled all the way through. The bail on top is fused to the bezel-set .07ct "Champaign" diamond on the bottom. This is a satisfyingly substantive pendant, weighing 9 grams. Hang it from a chain, thin ribbon or use it as a key fob. It's unisex for sure. I'm including an older handmade Victorian-era 19" silver chain with the pearl pendant because I think this chain is the perfect spiritual match: it features 17 hand-stamped flower blossoms stationed about every 19mm along the length of the chain and these blossoms tie-in so beautifully to the five-petaled silver and diamond bail.
