A very unusual Victorian Snake and Phoenix brooch pendant. The beautiful motif depicts a phoenix sitting on the coiled tail of a snake around him. Both animals are very realistically presented. The phoenix's body is studded with rose-cut diamonds and its eyes are presented with a ruby cabochon. The head feather of the bird is red enamelled. The snake's head is also set with rose-cut diamonds and ruby cabochon eyes. It is then finally surrounded by a masterful green enamel work on its body, which very realistically portraits the skin of the serpent. The snake's tail stub forms in a way that it can also be used to wear this piece as a pendant. Hallmarked and inventory numbers. The depiction of the phoenix and the serpent is an ever recurring symbol in history, from the ancient Egyptian tales of Herodotus to the Harry Potter saga more recently.
