Antonio Pineda Silver and Labradorite Necklace

About the Item

Antonio Pineda Silver and Labradorite Necklace Beautifully designed trapezoidal segments each centering oval labradorite cabochons within shadow boxes. Modernist Mexican Design Designer: Antonio Pineda Maker: Antonio Pineda Circa: 1953-1979 Dimensions: 15" L x 1" H Country of Origin: Mexico As seen in: Silver Seduction: The Art of Mexican Modernist Antonio Pineda pg. 140, no. 171 **Antonio Pineda was an internationally renowned Mexican modernist designer/silversmith known for his bold and striking designs. Born in Taxco in 1919, Pineda eventually became a member of a small well known group of silversmiths living and working in Taxco, Mexico in the 1940’s through the 1970’s. Pineda apprenticed briefly with William Spratling and Mexico City painter/silversmith Valentin Vidauretta before opening his own shop in 1939. Greatly influenced by Vidauretta, Antonio developed his own signature style, which was bold and spare, using inventive joining, catches, and closures. Aside from their intrinsic beauty, Pineda’s jewelry is amongst the most technically refined ever made in Taxco. Perhaps the biggest career break came when Pineda was invited to include his work in the 1944 exhibition at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. Richard Gump, heir to the exclusive Gump’s department store, purchased Antonio’s collection and offered to sell his designs. Pineda died in the US in 2009, after exhibiting his jewelry and sculpture throughout Mexico, Europe, and the US.
