Dennis Higgins Modernist 1990s Sterling Silver Abstract Necklace

About the Item

Presented is a 1990s modernist abstract sterling silver necklace by jewelry Dennis Higgins. Each link is carefully hand made with a martele' or hammered finish on the front and a smooth back. Additionally, the connector links are all hand made .The lobster claw clasp is stamped 925 for sterling silver. On the back of one link is stamped with the jeweler's last name and signature Higgins. The necklace measures 18 inches long, 1.13 inches wide and .38 of an inch deep. Very fine condition. Dennis Higgins was raised in New Britain, Connecticut, and studied fine art at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. He built his first foundry on Nantucket Island and began making objects and sculpture in 1975. Dennis' first pieces of jewelry were purchased by the gallery Sculpture To Wear. It was located inside the historic Plaza Hotel in New York City. Sculpture To Wear carried pieces not only from Calder, Max Ernst and Picasso but also Dennis. It was the perfect gallery to begin his career in jewelry-as-art. Not long after, the Museum of Modern Art purchased some of his pieces. Additionally, a patron for the Metropolitan Museum of Art bought a collection of Dennis Higgins jewelry and donated it to The Met for their permanent fashion collection. Dennis Higgins was one of the founders of Artwear, a prominent NYC gallery in the 1990s that evolved the esthetic of art jewelry from small pieces set with stones to large bold groundbreaking works of art that were meant to be worn. HIs work has been featured in the pages of prominent fashion publications including Vogue, Elle, W Magazine, the New York Times and many others. He has accessorized runway shows for well-known clothing designers Anne Klein, Ron Shamask, Andrew Fezza and more, and I did a host of private label designs for Coach, Cippriani and Robert Leighton, to name a few.
