Modernist Necklace 18K Midcentury Studio Piece Arte Suizo Caracas

About the Item

This luxurious solid (and very heavy) 18K yellow gold modernist necklace was created in the 1960s entirely by hand in South America by an unknown maker. Though the clasp is marked for metal fineness and there is a maker's mark, we are unable to identify the maker's name. Nonetheless, the work of an indisputable genius it is. Let us begin with the chain. 10 lengths of square wire are joined through soldered "o's" at each end. Including the clasp, the necklace measures 30" in length. The focal point is an abstract, organic form that was first cast, then finished by hand. There is the softest texurizing accomplished through the use of novel jeweler's tools and the overall effect is of a matt finish. Two spherical forms retain a high polish. The form at the top of the pendant is both matt and high polish. The pendant measures 89.24mm north to south and 50.80mm west to east at the widest point. What I find so entirely miraculous about this pendant is that it looks for all the world to be made of gold-tone origami paper. The subtle crease in the center, the "dent" such as it is; paper. And yet it is not. It is thick, thick, thick gold. Slightly over 1mm thick. That may not sound terribly thick, but when we are speaking of 18k yellow gold sheet metal, 1mm is quite thick indeed. The reverse of the pendant is satin finished. When worn, the necklace -chain and pendant- hang 18" from the nape as measured on our mannequin. This necklace is in spectacular condition; truly pristine. There are no dents or scratches and the only sign that time has passed since its original creation is the enrichment of the golden coloring. The necklace ships in its original blue leather box. Because a sticker -most probably a lot number from an auction house- was placed on the exterior of the box, the leather has pulled up beneath the sticker. A second sticker inside the box reads, "Arte Suizo Country Club Caracas". An exceedingly rare and important piece.

  • Gump's Jade Necklace Midcentury
    By Gump's San Francisco
    Located in Southbury, CT
This gorgeous, ethereal Midcentury jadeite jade necklace was created by the iconic San Francisco retailer, Gump's, circa 1970. The luminous, translucent fog-toned jade beads measure approximately 8.83mm and are on their original silk string. The necklace is finished with the classic Gump's 14k yellow gold clasp, that features both the metal fitness mark and the Gump's logo. Gump's never used treated jade in any of their jewelry; all authentic Gump's jewelry is natural and untreated "A" jade. These extraordinary beads are in soothing tones of soft, soft violet and the palest yellow. The palate here may be neutral but the impact certainly is not. The beads are so light-filled they seem to float, hovering over the fabric upon which they are draped. Vintage Gump...
