Victorian Archaeological Revival Gold Necklace
About the Item
A Victorian archaeological revival gold necklace, consisting of a row of fancy links, suspending eighty-six cone-shaped drop motifs, all made in yellow gold, with pull-down ring clasp, circa 1870, measuring approximately 44 x 1.5cm, gross weight 38.1 grams.
A Victorian necklace in good condition for its age with indication of historical repair. Unmarked, tested as 18ct gold.
This sculptural and alluring necklace comes from the collection of Bentley & Skinner, the London jewellers by appointment to both Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. Created in the mid-Victorian era, this necklace was made in the popular revivalist period of the time. Following many major discoveries and excavations of ancient treasures in Egypt, Italy, and Greece, there was a renewed interest in styles and techniques of ancient civilizations during the Victorian era. This necklace features conical shapes reminiscent of ancient amphoras and intricate and detailed links that are wonderfully flexible.
