Resplendent Mid 19th C. Cameo Necklace
About the Item
Here is a stylistically impeccable example of a late Georgian/early Victorian necklace of eleven skillfully carved plaques of sardonyx shell. Comprised of brown or taupe and white layers, the master carves away material to use the colors to impart an artistic rendering of an image. Each hand carved medallion is slightly different with each image "wearing" a necklace and earrings so fine is the detail. Set into octahedron bezels of 14k yellow gold, the images are so crisp and detailed that they appear as though carved from ivory. Attached by links of textured chain, the necklace is radiant.
Measurements: 18-1/2 inches (47 cm) in length when worn. Center (largest) cameo is 1 inch (2.5 cm) in length by 7/8 of an inch (2.3 cm) in width. Smaller outer cameos are 3/4 of an inch (1.8) cm in length by 5/8 of an inch (1.6 cm) in width. Length of total cameo area is 9-3/4 inches (25 cm). Weight of 54.0 grams (34.7 dwt).
Date & Origin: Circa 1840 – 1850 and carvings are most likely Italian or German in origin.
