About the Item

A rare and very special Vintage CIS Necklace Parure or suite, circa 1960. CIS jewellery was created by Cissy Zoltowska. A highly talented designer and all round fascinating woman, Countess Cissy Zoltowska was born in Austria. She was forced to flee Budapest in 1945, taking refuge in Switzerland where she began making a living making and selling her ceramic jewels and also her buttons and combs. Here she met and married an impoverished Polish Count hence her title. She moved to Paris in 1951 and embarked upon a highly successful career in haute couture costume jewellery. As well as her couture work she also designed more affordable pieces selling in shops across Europe, America and Japan. In 1968 when her haute couture work ceased, she moved to California, selling her work to the likes of Sachs. Like her contemporaries she was a champion of costume jewellery being an art form in its own right and not a poor imitation of fine jewellery. She is famously quoted as remarking ‘I do not like imitations! I eat real sugar, real butter, and drink real Vodka, so I decided to make real fantasy jewellery!’. Cissy designed couture jewellery for Balenciaga for an incredible fourteen years and also Pierre Balmain, Jacques Fath, James Galanos and her jewels were exceptionally highly regarded by the Parisian Haute Couture Houses of the time. Her client list unsurprisingly a who’s who of Parisian society’s elite. She is especially renowned for her signature necklaces, often large, imposing collars or inspired by historical designs and featuring intricate detailing and stone setting. To find a complete parure, where each piece is substantial and including a bracelet (not a brooch) as the third piece, is rare and stand out. Very few of Cissy’s pieces were signed and this parure carries the signature design elements by which her pieces are identifiable. The parure is crafted in Japanned silver tone metal and painstakingly hand set with a myriad of turquoise and clear glass paste stones – each one sitting in Cissy’s signature style mounts. The necklace is designed in an elaborate Girandole style with five pendant style drops, creating a spectacular impact at the neck. The bracelet design is an ornate eight plaque run with a stone set clasp. The earrings beautifully mirroring the pendant style droplets on the necklace. In very good vintage condition, necklace max. 43cms, bracelet 19cms, clip on earrings 5.5cms. Both the necklace and the bracelet feature their original safety chains. This suite is an outstanding example of Parisian Haute Couture jewellery and a beautiful example of the exquisite skill and craftsmanship of one of the leading Paruriers of the time.
