An 'Empire' style necklace and earrings, Christian Dior by Michel Maer, 1950s

About the Item

A very unusual and dramatic parure, of necklace and earrings, by Christian Dior, is a rare and highly typical example of Christian Dior style in the earliest days, recently highly detailed and depicted by major and highly successful exhibitions in both Paris and London. Made from swags of flattened link chains, that have been lightly enamelled in cream, they are suspended between soft 'bow' motifs, with pendants. The earrings also follow this same bow and pendant motif. Both necklace and earrings are made of a soft and warm gold wash, and the necklace and one earring are fully signed. Whether for the serious collector of all things Dior, or a highlight for a dazzling occasion, this very rare and charming parure would be an elegant and worthy addition to either. An American by birth, Mitchel Maer settled in England , where his company made jewellery for Christian Dior in the 1950s. The jewellery created was of the highest artistic and technical quality. He worked very closely with, and liaised with the Dior atelier in Paris, mixing Georgian and Victorian designs, as well as Byzantine, and those of the ancient world. The originality of his jewels and his highly personal style granted him the privilege of co-signing his pieces ‘Christian Dior by Mitchel Maer’. This ephemeral house lasted a few years, ceasing in 1956. Hence, these rare and beautiful pieces are highly cherished, and highly collectable.

Wear consistent with age and use. The measurements below are for the necklace alone. The earrings measure 1.75" in length, 0.8" wide, 0.5 deep. They weigh 14gms There is some slight 'foxing', or wear, on the two large pear-shaped clear paste drops only, at the front of the necklace.
