About the Item

This Statement Necklace is made from vintage orange /Terracotta color Pinna Nobilis, which is now officially recognized and listed as "Critically Endangered" by the IUCN. This iconic Mediterranean and Adriatic Sea shell is one of two of the largest shells in the world oceans. In antiquity, it was used for its Byssus or sea silk favored by kings and queens for making of special garments. In a not so distant past, over harvesting and pollution threatened it. More recently, an outbreak caused by exceptional sea warming weakened the shell's immunity, and consequently made it vulnerable to parasite attacks. This resulted in a huge mortality in the entire Mediterranean region. The statement necklace was made from a shell purchased from fishermen many years ago. The Pinna Necklace was made from the upper part of the shell in the shape of a new moon. Its upper edges are enhanced and strengthened by pieces curt from copper. This Statement Necklace is on one side embellished by 24 carat gold leaf ,hand beaten in Myanmar / from orange /Terracotta color Pinna Nobilis, which is now officially recognized and listed as "Critically Endangered" by the IUCN.
