14K Gold Victorian Enamel Miniature Portrait Medallion with 14K Gold Chain

About the Item

A lovely Victorian enamel painted miniature portrait of a lady in a medallion, surrounded by tiny rose cut diamonds on platinum. The medallion measures 7/8 inches and has a concave design, with 14 karat gold and bright cut work on the surface. The figure depicted in the medallion is a lady with a powdered wig, a tilted gaze and a purple dress. She smiles as she looks outside of our field of vision. The medallion dates to the 1880s but the rose cut diamond platinum surround was added in the 1900s (during the Edwardian era) to enhance the brilliance of this miniature portrait. The chain made of a white gold and is marked 14 karat. The chain measures 16 inches around. This piece is very lovely and has been well preserved over many years. A notable antique for any jewelry collection. Weighs 3.15 grams.

  • 14K Gold Signature Classical Revival Cupid Medallion
    Located in Venice, CA
Created as part of our signature collection, this 14k gold intaglio medallion depicts Cupid seated on top of a bow quiver. Cupid, the god of love and attraction, draws his arrow, ready to strike an unsuspecting victim with the power of love. Beneath him are rolling clouds that Cupid rides, as if on a ship. The image is outlined with a border of three lines to complete the beautiful image. Using a rare bronze intaglio from the late 1700’s, we created a mold and cast the pendant in gold. We hand-carved depth into the mold so that the details would pop on the contemporary medallion as beautifully as they do on the original antique intaglio, and then lovingly added a gentle patina by hand to the finished piece. The intaglio used as a mold for this medallion is attributed to the James Tassie workshop, circa the late 18th century. Born in 1735, Tassie was a Scottish stonemason who invented a glassy white paste perfect for replicating gemstones. Tassie was commissioned across Europe, first by Catherine the Great of Russia, then by the Wedgwood factory, to create imitation gemstones and elaborately carved intaglios. In 1773, most of the infamous blue and white cameos in the Wedgwood catalogue were cast from molds made by Tassie. The artist left behind a collection of over 15,800 intricate pieces of artwork. Many of Tassie’s intaglios...

Created as part of our signature collection, this 14k gold intaglio medallion depicts Aphrodite lounging luxuriously, surrounded by winged putti who seem to be attending to her every need. A sensuous tree climbs across the backdrop, suggesting the scene is set in a beautiful garden. Aphrodite is the Greek goddess of love and beauty, referred to as Venus in Roman mythology. She is the ruler of fertility, pleasure, and desire.
