The subject is taken from an engraving that has not been identified. It seems to have circulated in certain workshops, as shown by a painted enamel plate of the same composition by the Limoges enamel painter Jean II Pénicaud, circa 1545, in the Walter Art Gallery, Baltimore (inv. 44.60, fig.).
