About the Item

Twenty-six round gold beads with sixteen round carnelian beads and a carved jasper figure of a man pendant. The man, presumably a chief, holds his hands touching in front of his chest. A beard is indicated with three vertical marks. The eyes appear to be half closed; they are depicted by raised bulges incised with a horizontal line (like coffee beans). The stone pieces are said to be from the Tairona people of Colombia, South America. They have been made entirely without the use of metal tools by the use of abrasives, drills and string saws. In spite of the limitations of this labor intensive process, they have achieved wonderfully expressive results. The chief projects and air of serenity and wisdom. The jasper figure is 4.4 cm in height. It is 2.24 cm at the widest point of the head and shoulders. It is 2.2 cm thick. It is drilled through the back of the neck for suspension (the hole is 3 mm in diameter). The carnelian beads are flattened spheres that decrease slightly in size towards the back of the necklace. They are 13.5 mm (by 11.5mm), 12.5 mm (by 10 mm) and 10.5 mm (by 9.25 mm) in diameter. A second set of smaller round beads are 8.5 mm (by 6 mm), 7.75 mm by (5.25 mm), 7.5 mm (by 4.5 mm) in diameter. The larger beads are faced by a pair of 9 mm round gold beads. The smaller stone beads are faced by a pair of 7.5 mm round gold beads. The clasp is a hook and eye with the hook made from a tapered strip with the end rolled. The beading tips are domed circles and visually providing a transition to the clasp. With flat backs, they lay comfortably on the neck. The necklace is 15 inches (38.5 cm) in length. The necklace weighs 77.25 grams.
