22 Karat Gold Mask Necklace by Romae Jewelry Inspired by an Ancient Design
About the Item
22 Karat Gold Mask Pendant and 20" Chain Necklace by Romae Jewelry Inspired by an Ancient Greek Design. Our delicate and provocative Zephyrus pendant is based on a seventh century BC example from Lyktos, Crete. While we do not know whether or not it was meant to be anthropomorphic, the piece does suggest a human face, and may have depicted a mask. Here, large eyes engage from beneath marked eyebrows, a headband, and "curls" of hair. In ancient art, large frontal eyes were often depicted as an apotropaic device, or one meant to ward off evil. It is our hope that the wearer of our unique and elegant pendant will feel confident and secure. "Zephyrus" is the name of a Greek god of the western wind, thought to be the gentlest of the four.
Each piece of Romae jewelry is inspired by an ancient example, and is carefully designed and lovingly crafted in Rome by archaeologist and museum specialist Cris and artist Elena. Our pieces are made to order, and each is individually cast, hand finished and personalized, which allows for freedom of stone choice and special tailoring such as inscriptions and engravings. When shipped, each piece of Romae jewelry arrives with a product card that provides information about the culture, date, and find spot of the original piece of jewelry that inspired our design. Lead time 4 - 5 weeks.
