About the Item
St. Sebastian (Milan, 256 - Rome, January 20, 288) was a Roman soldier, martyr for having supported the Christian faith, venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church.
The pierced image of St. Sebastian has become over the centuries an icon source of inspiration for many artists who have portrayed him in different attitudes, features and poses: from the most languid and ephebic of Piero del Pollaio, to the most virile of Andrea Mantegna.
The mystery of the power of the image of Saint Sebastian embodies the heroic Virtue necessary to gain sanctity; the archè of man made in the image and likeness of God. In the perfection of its forms, in the resistance to the physical suffering inflicted by martyrdom, its body does not hide its beauty even in the supreme act of immolating itself for God. In it, in fact, the immortality of the soul is symbolized and the promise, made by Christ when he defeated death, of the resurrection of bodies.

Antonietta De Marchi was born and lives in Rome. She studied at the Academy of Goldsmith Arts in Rome and then at RUFA (Rome University of Fine Arts) where she specialized in sculpture and installation.

Among the many works, she has created the ring "Piscatorio" for Pope Francis now preserved in the "Treasure of the Sistine Chapel". His production also includes the creation of the three monumental amphorae for the Vatican Basilica of St. Peter and used by the Pope during the Easter rite. He also restored the most important jewel preserved in the Vatican: the Tiara of Pope Pius IX donated by Queen Isabella of Spain in 1854.
