About the Item

Ancient ,at least 2000 years old (or much older) original pendant of Taweret - protective ancient Egyptian goddess of childbirth and fertility later mounted in solid 18K gold frame. Material is fiance or carved limestone. This amulet had been in possession of Egyptian / Coptic Christian family for many generations and was acquired in Valley of the Kings more than 100 years ago. It was custom mounted in 18K Gold protective frame in ca. 1950s and worn as an amulet again.That family emigrated to Scandinavia in 1990s. Measurements : 34mm x 19 at bottom x 19 deep , weight 7.3gr. Condition as on the images, wear to carved details, minor fragments missing. No cracks or repairs. Frame is hallmarked 18K in Arabic. In Ancient Egyptian religion, Taweret (also spelled Taurt, Tuat, Tuart, Ta-weret, Tawaret, Twert and Taueret, and in Greek, Θουέρις – Thouéris, Thoeris, Taouris and Toeris) is the protective ancient Egyptian goddess of childbirth and fertility. The name "Taweret" (Tȝ-wrt) means "she who is great" or simply "great one", a common pacificatory address to dangerous deities. The deity is typically depicted as a bipedal female hippopotamus with feline attributes, pendulous female human breasts, the limbs and paws of a lion, and the back and tail of a Nile crocodile. She commonly bears the epithets "Lady of Heaven", "Mistress of the Horizon", "She Who Removes Water", "Mistress of Pure Water", and "Lady of the Birth House". Protective amulets bearing the likenesses of female hippopotami have been found dating as far back the Predynastic period (c. 3000–2686 BCE). The tradition of making and wearing these amulets continued throughout the history of Egypt into the Ptolemaic Kingdom and the Roman period (c. 332 BCE – 390 CE).(source : WIKI) Note: this pendant sell without chain/no chain will be included. ☥ > Most of the items that we sell are not new at all if not stated otherwise. It is often difficult or impossible to get an accurate characteristics of the weight , color and nature of inclusions without removing the stones from the settings to be weighed and examined and doing that may damage the piece.
