Antique 14K Gold Filigree and Cannetille Cross Pendant
About the Item
An antique 19th century Dutch cross pendant created with fine wire and cannetille work. This lovely antique cross is beautifully decorated with a repoussé design throughout the cross, a technique of metalworking in which the gold is shaped by hammering from the reverse side to create this design in low relief. Repoussé is a French term meaning "pushed up". The cannetille and hammered figures are flanked by fine filigree wirework and the so-called spiders or small flower knots. This beautiful handmade gold cross pendant dates from the 19th century, circa 1850.
The origin of the technique repoussé is attributed to ancient civilizations. The finest examples of repoussé are represented in the famous work on bronze Greek armor from the 3rd or 4th century BC. Repoussé is often confused with embossing. Embossing is made in the opposite way of repoussé; instead of working the back of the material as with repoussé, when embossing the artist works the metal from the front of the object. Try to tell the difference between the repoussé around the edges and the relief on the face.
The pendant is in very good condition and of high quality. Previously owned and gently worn, with little signs of use. The cross measures 4.3 centimeters in length and 2.6 centimeters wide, including bail. The pendant weighs 1.63 grams. Marked on the bail. The pendant comes without the chain.
The cross pendant will be gift-wrapped in a black and gold jewelry box.
