Antique Cut Steel Necklace
About the Item
A fine example of an ornate cut steel necklace with two sizes of rosettes, including along the collar as well as the clasp, with tassels dripping from the five central rosettes. The central rosettes is graduated in size. The 2 sizes represent a finer example of cut steel necklace construction, as the smaller rosettes along the collar allow the necklace to hang more gracefully from the neck. Cut steel necklaces are surprisingly light which helps them stay firmly on the chest. Typically, 2 sizes of rosettes is representative of a more fine example of cut steel. Cut steel was constructed so in such a way that the the flickering movement of candlelight multiplies its light reflecting surfaces so that the piece sparkles like diamonds. It is, to this day, the only jewelry designed and constructed by steelworkers and is considered a minor art.
