Art Deco Reverse Crystal Intaglio 'Essex Crystal' Dachshund
About the Item
On a background of mother of pearl, popping forward as if ready to jump on your lap, a black and tan dachshund looks at you with soft eyes that seem to implore you to remain at home. Note, the slight off round of the outer frame has been made completely round. We all know that look that makes you feel guilty about leaving. This is the incredible art of reverse crystal intaglio also known as essex crystal. The dog appears to be three dimensional. A cabochon of rock crystal has been cut into on the reverse and a miniature image then carved backwards into the stone and painted. It is hard enough to contemplate doing such beautiful work straight on, but doing it backwards seems an impossibility. The pendant was made c. 1930. It is 14 Kt gold and made in the .United States. It is inscribed on the reverse "to Dini from Dad in 1954" The chain is for exhibit only and sold separately. Size 1 1/2 inch in diameter. Condition is excellent
